Is this OSHA-approved construction silica training?
This course meets the general training requirements under OSHA 29 CFR 1926.1153(i)(2). To achieve full compliance, employers must supplement it with site-specific training on the actual tasks, materials, and controls on the jobsite, the employer’s written exposure control plan, the identity of the competent person, and — where respirators are used — fit testing and a respiratory protection program.
What is the difference between the PEL and the action level for silica?
The permissible exposure limit (PEL) is 50 µg/m³ as an 8-hour TWA — no worker may be exposed above it. The action level is 25 µg/m³ as an 8-hour TWA, exactly half the PEL. Reaching the action level triggers protective program elements such as exposure assessment and medical-surveillance eligibility, so obligations begin well before exposure reaches the legal maximum.
What is Table 1 in the construction silica standard?
Table 1 is a list of 18 common construction tasks paired with specified engineering controls, work practices, and required respiratory protection. If an employer fully and properly implements a task’s Table 1 controls, the employer does not have to assess that worker’s exposure or compare it to the PEL for that task. The catch is “fully and properly” — a water system that is off or dry, or a dust collector that is clogged, drops the task out of Table 1 protection.
Why does tuckpointing have the strictest respirator requirement?
Handheld grinders used for mortar removal (tuckpointing) generate among the highest respirable silica concentrations in construction — often far above recommended limits when uncontrolled. Table 1 requires an APF 10 respirator for four hours or less and an APF 25 respirator for more than four hours, the highest requirement in the table.
Who qualifies for silica medical surveillance in construction?
Medical surveillance must be made available at no cost to any worker who will be required to use a respirator for 30 or more days per year under the standard. The initial exam is offered within 30 days of assignment and includes a work and medical history, a chest X-ray classified by a NIOSH-certified B Reader, spirometry, and a latent TB test. Note this 30-day trigger is specific to construction and differs from general industry.
